FinS Trout Release
Fish in Schools Program Fish in Schools (FinS) is a provincial fisheries education program established by the Government of Alberta in 1998. This unique program provides schools across the province from kindergarten to grade 12 with hands-on learning opportunities to raise rainbow trout in their classrooms. From January through May, students and teachers participating in FinS receive a Fish Research Licence to raise trout from eggs to frylings in their classroom, then release these fish into provincially-approved waterbodies as a part of Alberta’s fish stocking program. Since its inception, the program has directly engaged over 60,000 students in over 40 communities across the province.

Participating in a trout release with kids is a fantastic way to engage them with nature and teach them about environmental conservation. This hands-on activity allows children to connect with wildlife and understand the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems. As they carefully release the young trout into their new aquatic home, kids learn about the life cycle of fish, the importance of clean waterways, and the role they play in preserving biodiversity. It’s a wonderful opportunity to instill a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the environment, making it both an educational and memorable experience. Plus… the excitement on their faces as they watch the trout swim away is truly priceless!
A big shout out and thanks to the following supporters to make this day possible!
